Calling all mathematics educators! If you are as excited as I am about the release of Jo Boaler’s new book, Math-ish, then you are going to want to get in on this book study. The book is set to release on May 7th, 2024.

Who is your facilitator: Dustin Purdy is a passionate mathematics educator with over 17 years of experience teaching math in rural, urban, and online settings.

Dustin has taught grades 6-12, with experience in 6th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, 8th Grade Math, Algebra, Algebra A1/A2, Honors Algebra, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and has also taught college courses. He is a NYS Certified 5-12 Math Teacher experienced with The CCLS and NextGen Standards. Currently Dustin is teaching 6-12 math at Dwight Global Online School. He is passionate about transforming mathematics education; teaching growth mindset in mathematics; and creating an equitable and inclusive space where all students can learn, grow and thrive.

An AI-Resistant Approach to Teaching Statistics — Webinar Reflection

I recently joined Nicole Hamilton and Lucas Owen as a panelist in a webinar titled “An AI-Resistant Approach to Teaching Statistics,” which explored how statistics instruction must evolve in a world where generative AI can quickly perform calculations and produce answers. Rather than focusing on limiting AI, the conversation centered on designing learning experiences that emphasize human reasoning, curiosity, and authentic data exploration.One key takeaway is that statistics instruction should move beyond procedural calculations and instead focus on sense-making with real data. When students investigate authentic datasets, pose their own questions, and interpret patterns, the learning becomes far more meaningful—and much harder for AI to replace.
